About the Artist

Karen Cullen is a scientist and artist living in Western Australia.

She has a background in arachnology and molecular biology, using scientific illustrations to describe new species of Arachnids and Myriapods.

Coming to watercolour painting relatively recently, she now channels her scientific expertise into creating watercolour paintings that highlight Australia’s rich biodiversity.

Drawing inspiration from the intricate beauty of the natural world, her work primarily uses the luminosity of watercolour to capture the vibrant colours or delicate details of her subjects.

She strives to convey the beauty and fragility of nature, with an underlying message of conservation in the hope that it inspires an appreciation for the natural world.
