Peony Poppies

SOLD

I love flowers, flowers grown by me that bloom in our garden! We are both keen gardeners and have been lucky enough to get these huge frothy pink poppies to grow and flower, sadly this year there is too much shade and only red poppies have bloomed…..maybe next year. The painting process is always such fun and I let this subject dictate the finished work. What a joy to be an artist!

Wattle & Wrens

SOLD

This is part of a series, I tend to work in series when producing of most of my works and this one was such a buzz to paint. I have used my favourite Japanese rice bowl with it’s band of iron glaze and delicate blue and white, the WA hand-made pot behind is in constant use on my studio desk and filled with brushes, the blue wrens, such delightful delicate, tiny birds with that stunning blue were all a perfect foil for the yellow wattle that was in flower in the local park. Then there was the background…. Just had to paint!!

Dusk

$210

18 x 28 cm – Unframed & Matted

With our wonderfully wet winter, my senses were really opened to the many misty grey mornings and evenings that we had. They have their own beauty of soft colours and muted tones. I thought it the perfect subject to paint and this is my favourite time of day. The challenge was how to achieve the softly layered shrubbery. I have used a technique called wet-in-wet to produce the work, keeping the paper uniformly wet allows the paint to bloom over the paper and produces these interesting and intriguing vegetation marks and contrasting foreground.

Scent of Summer

$750 – Framed
$490 – Unframed

38 x 56cm – Unframed & Matted

More from my garden! These roses are ‘Pierre Du Ronsard’…… a simply gorgeous rose with the delicate colours and masses of petals. We first saw them in Tasmania and on arrival home we planted 3 of the climbing variety and we have been well rewarded with masses of blooms. I approached this work with a combination of wet-in-wet and dry brush over several days, letting the paper dry between the many layers of applied washes.

Symphony in Blue

SOLD

61 x 81cm – Watercolour on Aluminium

This is statement work and quite large for watercolour measuring 110 cm x 80cms and was painted on board. It came about after I had the opportunity to tutor workshops in the renowned Secret Garden in Margaret River situated in our beautiful southwest. The Secret Garden is overflowing with many different varieties of hydrangea in summer, a cool blue oasis under massive trees, so very beautiful.

Many different tones and  layers of blues over many, many hours went into producing this work as each layer was left to dry before continuing with the next. With the design in mind, I felt the very busy area of massed petals needed balance and so the corner was left almost unadorned. It was the largest and most complex work I had produced at that point in 2021.

The Arbor

$250 – Framed
$110 – Unframed & Matted

14 x 18cm

Trees are a definite favourite and I could paint them all day long. Growing up on a farm in the southwest I have a deep love of nature and trees are top of that list with an endless variety of shapes colours, textures, they also provide such an atmosphere to the environment. Who could stand in the very special Boranaup Forest and not be moved by those wonderful towering trees, those giants of nature? I just love trees!

This particular stand of trees were in a paddock and what drew me to them was the positive and negative spaces between the trees. I painted by layering different tones and coloured washes and had a wonderful time!
