About the Artist

Born in South Australia and now living in Millbridge in the Greater Bunbury Area of Western Australia.

While not having formal qualifications in art, Debbie has always been engaged in the arts in one form or the other.  Undertaking drawing and watercolour classes in Adelaide before moving to rural WA. This was where her interests diversified, mainly due to living in remote locations, to photography, embroidery, sewing and other handicrafts.  Anything she could get her teeth into that was available locally.

Once moving to the Greater Bunbury Region the opportunities for more serious artistic pursuits arose.  Dabbling for a while in pottery, Debbie then began attending classes at the Bunbury Regional Art Gallery which lead to her being able to join the Red Mill Artist group with Rocheen Navarro.  It was here her network grew and the real learning began.

Painting in all mediums, Debbie’s work has turned full circle from watercolour to acrylic then oil and now she is again concentrating on watercolour.  Debbie is a Committee Member of the Watercolour Society of Western Australia and the South West Plein Air Painters & Sketchers.

An avid workshop attendee, Debbie has travelled to Bathurst and Cairns to attend workshops with well known artists such as John Lovett, Tony Belobrajdic, Tony White, John Haycraft & Richard Klekociuk and the late John Turton.

Watercolour, while at times unforgiving, is easily transportable which has enabled plein air painting to become Debbie’s major passion.  While mainly painting landscapes and architectural subjects, Debbie also connects with quirky and fun subject matter.

“Art is as much about the connection with other artists as it is about the finished works.  Art links you to the world, you see things with a keener eye and find joy even in the mundane.”

The Road Home

$900

56cm x 76cm – Framed

After a weekend away painting in Denmark in the Great Southern of Western Australia, I saw this grove of trees and just had to slam the brakes on and take a photo.  This is a memory of a great weekend painting plein air in the countryside.  Full sheet, watercolour & a little ink.

Anyone who lives in Australind and travels from Bunbury will recognise this scene.  It is locally known as “The Jetty”.  Originally a pipeline to pump waste materials into the Estuary from the Titanium processing plant, it is now a regular walking 2.6 km trail for people and dogs.  Pelicans, swans and dolphins abound in the Leschenault Estuary.

Andy

$350

22cm x 33cm – Framed

From the Kaleidoscope Exhibition at the Collie Art Gallery.  I was invited to take part in this exhibition of watercolours at one of the best rural art galleries in Australia.  There was no theme but I had previously painted some roosters and was encourage to keep working on them.  This is Andy, the first of four.  All named after famous artists.  I am sure you can guess which Andy it is.

Leonardo

$350

22cm x 33cm – Framed

Another rooster, again named after a famous painter.  One who I actually share a birth date with.  A clever man with many many different talents.

Salvador

$350

22cm x 33cm – Framed

Rooster #3.  Salvador, sans moustache.  Somehow I thought a rooster would look a bit silly with a moustache.  Maybe I should have put one on him.  I do think I got the eyes about right.

Vincent

$350

22cm x 33cm – Framed

Vincent – last but not least.  Red hair and slightly crazy look on his face says it all.  A brilliant if rather sad painter.
