Philomena is an Australian of Chinese descent. She paints in both the traditional Chinese Brush painting and Western watercolor styles.

A combination of both styles produces a uniqueness that reconciles the calligraphic mark making of Chinese art with the many techniques available to western watercolorists. Her unique style is characterized by a certain luminosity of tone and elegant, strong brushstrokes that impart a sense of freedom of spirit.

ART ACTIVITIES

Philomena has been exhibiting her art regularly since 1982. Her displays include both mixed and solo exhibitions. She often gives demonstrations of Chinese Brush Painting to schools, art societies and public art events. She teaches Chinese Brush Painting.

MISCELLANEA

24 of Philomena’s paintings are featured in the book “Chinese Journey (C.Koch/N.Hasluck) · Her painting “Spring Returns to the Big Earth” was commissioned for poster reproduction to commemorate the Chinese New Year of the Dog in Perth. · Her painting “The Nubian” is on the book cover of Women’s Writing Journal “The Speculum” · Her cover design and other minor illustrations feature in Western Australian Business World, Marketing and Communications.

OTHER INTERESTS

In the field of choral music, Philomena conducted choirs for 15 years while living in Malaysia and in Perth,was choral director of the Kalamunda Choral Society, W.Australia for 11 years. Currently, she conducts the choir at St. Emilie’s in Canning Vale. · Philomena is a retired lecturer in Education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (University of London) and a Master of Arts degree (University of Lancaster).
