Biography

ImagePenny Maddison was born in Kuching, Sarawak. Her mother was a Perth girl and her father was an English Colonial officer who went to Borneo to work for the last White Rajah.

In her early childhood the family moved to Perth, settling in the Hills at Darlington. She attended Darlington Primary School and Perth College, going on to complete a Diploma in Interior Design from Perth Tech. On the completion of her studies Penny went to work in London and to travel in Europe.

Eventually she settled in South Africa with her engineer husband and raised four daughters. Her great love of art emerged as a passion for watercolour and was gradually honed over the years by wonderful teachers and workshops, and always practice. She has painted fulltime since 1992.

Since returning to Perth, Penny has participated in exhibitions of the Watercolour Society of W.A. and various other group exhibitions. A successful solo exhibition was held at Houghton Wines in 1999. She was President of the Watercolour Society of W.A. 2004-2007 and vice president 2000-2004 Penny’s work hangs in collections in the U.S.A., Canada, U.K., France, Germany, Holland, Japan, New Zealand, Italy, and South Africa. Corporate collections owning her work include Siemons Nixdorf (R.S.A.), The Royal Bank of Canada, (Johannesburg.) and Time Mining International.

For many years Penny’s inspiration came mainly from the wildlife of Africa, particularly birds for which she was best known. However, in recent years she has concentrated more on landscape and architectural subjects. An enduring love affair with flowers and plants finds expression in floral paintings and occasional side trips are undertaken into portraiture and still life. Penny has specialized in traditional watercolour but loves drawing which leads to work in pencil, pastel and charcoal.

After many years travelling, visiting more than 35 countries Penny returned to Perth with her family to settle at Gooseberry Hill where she has built a rammed earth studio from which to re-explore, through her art, the flora, fauna, landscape and architecture of Australia. She is at present teaching watercolour at Claremont School of Art, and a small group of hills artists. In 2007 she co-tutored a watercolour-painting trip to the Greek Islands with Sandy Robertson.
